Coaching Staff
Head Coach John Marovich
In January of 2008 John Marovich was named the third head coach in the history of the Valparaiso University women’s soccer program. He joined the Valparaiso University coaching staff as an assistant coach prior to the 2002 season. After serving in this role for the Crusaders for his first three seasons with the program, he was promoted to associate head coach, where he assumed a full-time role prior to the 2005 season.
In 2008, his first season at the helm of the Brown and Gold, Marovich’s squad finished 10-6-3 overall while setting a new school record with 10 shutouts on the season. His team also set a new school mark for lowest goals against average in a season, 0.71, and posted a 7-2-1 mark at home.
During his stint as a head coach, Marovich has had three players already earn All-Horizon League honors, including one First Team selection and one Second Team pick while the third earned All-Newcomer Team accolades. His team has also had success in the classroom, as two student-athletes were named both to the Horizon League’s All-Academic Team as well as the Academic All-District V squad.
In 2007, Marovich was an assistant on the Valpo coaching staff as the Crusaders moved into the Horizon League for the first time. During the first season in the new conference, he helped Valpo post a 10-9 record, finishing fifth in the highly competitive league. The Crusaders also had three student-athletes earn All-Horizon League honors, with two Second Team picks and an All-Newcomer Team selection.
Marovich was also instrumental in the Crusaders’ success in both 2005 and 2006. The Brown and Gold won both the Mid-Continent Conference regular season and tournament titles in 2005, setting a new school record for victories with 12, as well as posting the best winning percentage at the time in the program’s history. Valpo earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament for the first time, traveling to Notre Dame, a team Marovich spent time assisting prior to arriving at Valpo.
The next season, 2006, Marovich was a part of the Crusaders’ first outright regular season Mid-Continent Conference title in school history, as Valpo again won 12 matches, while also setting a new mark for winning percentage in a season at .711.
In his first five seasons on the bench for the Brown and Gold, Valpo earned four Mid-Continent Conference Tournament berths, advancing to the title match in 2004 in addition to winning the championship in 2005.
Marovich arrived at Valpo after spending the 2001 season as a women’s volunteer assistant coach at the University of Notre Dame, helping lead the Fighting Irish to the Big East regular season and tournament championships. During Marovich’s stay, Notre Dame also advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Before moving to the collegiate field, Marovich was the head girls’ coach at Andrean High School, where he led the 59ers to the state title match in 1999. In his seven seasons at Andrean, he won two conference titles and three sectional championships, as well as a regional and semi-state title. Marovich was named the National Soccer Coaches Association of America’s Indiana private/parochial school state Coach of the Year in 1999.
Marovich has earned his United States Soccer Federation “A” License. He played collegiate soccer at Purdue-Calumet, where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in construction technology in 1994. He also serves as an Olympic Development Program age group head coach in the state of Indiana and is also a staff coach for Region II.
John and his wife, Susan, have been married since 1995 and have two children, Mackenzie, born in 1999, and Kacey, born in 2003.
Heather Clark
Assistant Coach
Heather Clark joined the Valparaiso University soccer coaching staff during the summer of 2008 as an assistant coach.
With the Crusaders, Clark helps with all aspects of the program, from coaching to recruiting. She has taken over the team’s travel accommodations as well as handling all of the equipment needs for the program.
In her first season on the Crusader bench, 2008, Clark’s defensive experience helped guide the Brown and Gold to a school record 10 shutouts as well as a school-best 0.71 goals against average.
Clark arrived at Valpo from the University of Texas-El Paso, where she served as a graduate assistant for the Miners two seasons. While a coach at UTEP, the Miners posted a 28-13-2 record.
A fixture on defense during her playing career at UTEP, she compiled 19 points on four goals and 11 assists in 70 matches. Clark served as a team captain in both 2003 and 2004.
She also excelled in the classroom during her playing days, being honored as a First Team Academic All-American in 2004 as selected by CoSIDA. She was also a two-time Academic All-District selection. Clark also earned Academic All-Western Athletic Conference honors on multiple occasions.
Clark has her United States Soccer Federation National “D” License and has received regional and state goalkeeping diplomas from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
Clark is a 2006 graduate of UTEP with a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education and completed her Masters of Education focusing on education administration and leadership at UTEP in 2008.
Mia Moody
Assistant Coach
Mia Moody was named an assistant coach for the Valparaiso University soccer program during the summer of 2008.
In 2008, Moody brought her passion for attack to the Crusaders’ offense, helping them post a 7-2-1 record at home on the way to a 10-6-3 season overall.
Moody arrived at Valpo after playing two seasons with IUPUI, where she scored four goals and added an assist during her career.
She began her career at the University of Texas before transferring to the Jaguars’ program in 2004. Moody earned Academic All Mid-Continent Conference Team honors while at IUPUI.
Moody has also gained coaching experience as an assistant coach at Roncalli High School during the 2007-2008 season as well as working with the Dynamo Club from 2005-2007. She has earned her United States Soccer Federation National “D” License.
Moody is a 2007 graduate of IUPUI with a concentration in social and behavioral science. She is currently working on her master’s degree in sports administration at Valparaiso University.
